Manchester United 'hoping to raise £100m from player sales this summer'

sportsmole.co.uk, 25 January 2024, 23:14
Manchester United are reportedly hoping to raise at least £100m from player sales in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils spent in excess of £170m on five permanent signings last summer - Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana the club's three marquee additions - while they also generated over £50m from the sale of 11 players.

However, Erik ten Hag's side have failed to kick on following a relatively successful first year under the Dutchman in 2022-23, as the 20-time English champions are languishing in eighth place in the Premier League table this term, 16 points behind leaders Liverpool and 11 adrift of Aston Villa in fourth.

Man United have also been eliminated from Europe following a disastrous Champions League group-stage campaign, and were knockout out in the EFL Cup fourth round, while the FA Cup remains their only realistic chance of lifting silverware this season.

In a bid to return the Red Devils to the summit of English and European football, INEOS founder and British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe has purchased a 25% stake in the club, subject to Premier League ratification, and will take full control of the club's footballing operations from majority owners, the Glazers.

Sir Dave Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc will also represent Man United at boardroom level and further changes have also been made, including the appointment of new CEO Omar Berrada last weekend following his departure from rivals Manchester City.

According to i news, as soon as all the major boardroom changes have been made, Man United will turn their attention to the first-team squad and begin the process of offloading players.

The report adds that academy graduate Mason Greenwood, currently on loan at Getafe, represents United's best hope of recouping a significant fee, as cashing in on youth products is regarded as 100% profit in the eyes of Financial Fair Play.

Greenwood, who is valued at around £34.2m (€40m), allegedly has a small chance of reviving his career at Man United, but the 22-year-old forward has attracted interest from several La Liga clubs including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia.

Meanwhile, fellow academy graduate Scott McTominay is said to be regarded by Man United as 'replaceable' and they hope that clubs such as West Ham United will reignite their interest in the midfielder next summer.

Two more youth products in the form of Hannibal Mejbri and Alvaro Fernandez have moved out on loan to Sevilla and Benfica respectively this month, and the duo have clauses in their deals that, if activated in the summer, could make their exits from Old Trafford permanent.

In addition, Casemiro, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all said to be facing uncertain futures at Man United, with the quartet attracting interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.

United opted to trigger the 12-month extension clause in Wan-Bissaka's contract earlier this month, but the Red Devils are said to be open to a sale of the right-back this summer amid interest from Al-Nassr and Inter Milan.

It is thought that United would also be keen to get Casemiro's huge wages off their books, while Sancho's long-term future remains unknown as he looks to reignite his career on loan at Borussia Dortmund for the second half of the campaign.

As for Antony, who has failed to register either a goal or an assist in 22 appearances for United this season, the player's agent has firmly denied suggestions that his client could leave Old Trafford in January, while it remains to be seen if any potential suitors will come forward in the summer.
