Man City Women run riot against United in record-breaking derby at Old Trafford

Manchester City left a record-breaking crowd stunned after running riot in the Women's Super League.

City ran out 3-1 winners against Manchester United in front of 43,615 fans - a record crowd for a women's match at Old Trafford.

Things got off to the perfect start for Marc Skinner's side as Katie Zelem put the Red Devils 1-0 up from the penalty spot following a handball from Alex Greenwood.

But City took just 13 minutes to level the game when Chloe Kelly did well to pick out Jill Roord in the penalty area before wrong-footing Mary Earps to find the bottom left corner.

City then took the lead a minute later when some fine work from Bunny Shaw in the box saw the ball laid off to Lauren Hemp.

The Lionesses star curled a beautiful effort over Earps and into the top corner of the net in front of the Stretford End, leading to wild celebrations from the City squad.

Skinner's side had hoped to find a way back into the game in the second half, but a short back-pass allowed Shaw to put pressure on Earps in the United goal.

Attempting to clear the ball, the ball deflected off Shaw's boot and into the back of the net, leading to more celebrations in front of a deflated Old Trafford crowd.

A second booking for Laia Aleixandri meant that Man City would have to hold on with just ten players on the pitch, but they did with ease to secure the crucial three points.

Not only did City claim victory on enemy turf, but they also leapfrogged United in the WSL table and now sit in third spot behind Chelsea and Arsenal.
