Bo Svensson's Mainz enjoyed a three-match unbeaten start to the season, but have won just one of their last five. Defeat in Freiburg means they have collected one point from the previous nine on offer, while three-goal top scorer Karim Oniwiso hasn't found the back of the net since Matchday 3, in a reflection of the 05ers' underwhelming run of form. Jonathan Burkardt did at least mark his return to the side with an assist last time out, but is now seven Bundesliga matches without a goal. Defender Alexander Hack is back from suspension and Maxim Leitsch is fit again, meaning Anthony Caci - scorer of a last-gasp equaliser against Hertha Berlin on Matchday 7 - will most likely to make way.

Ahead of Mainz on goal difference in mid table, Leipzig followed up their 4-0 win over Bochum by beating Celtic 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League. Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring with his ninth competitive goal of the season, but the result was marred by a serious knee injury to goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. Janis Blaswich - who made his Bundesliga debut at 31 earlier in the campaign - is now set for a run in the side. Werner was back among the goals against Bochum, the Germany international bringing up his 100th in Leipzig colours after going five games without scoring in the Bundesliga. Andre Silva is yet to fire in the league this season, but marked his third successive start under Marco Rose with a midweek brace. With Konrad Laimer and Dani Olmo still out, Rose is set to stand by his winning formula.

Werner has 13 goals in as many competitive meetings with Mainz.

Nkunku has scored six times in eight league games this season. Only Werder Bremen's Niclas Füllkrug has more (eight).

Leipzig have claimed a league-leading 10 points at home, but are second bottom of the away table (one point).

Mainz have collected two of their 11 points so far this season on home soil - a league-low ratio of 18 percent.

One home goal is another ignominious low for the 05ers, despite 41 efforts on goal, though Leipzig have shipped 10 on their travels.

Burkardt scored seven of his team-leading 11 Bundesliga goals last season at the Mewa Arena.
