Jurgen Klopp's warning for Liverpool defenders ahead of Ivan Toney test

mirror.co.uk, 24 September 2021, 13:05

Liverpool have started the new Premier League campaign in fine form, picking up from how they ended last season.

Unbeaten so far, they have looked more reminiscent of the title-winning team of 2019/20 rather than the team that struggled so much last season.

Jurgen Klopp's side have looked reinvigorated and Anfield once again feels like a fortress, with the Reds' high-energy game proving too much for their opposition.

After securing their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with an routine 3-0 win over Norwich City on Tuesday, Liverpool turn their attention back to the league, where they face newly-promoted Brentford.

The west London club have impressed on their long-awaited return to the top flight with their high-pressing, fearless football and data-led approach.

The Bees have secured two wins on the bounce, putting two goals past Wolves last Saturday then trouncing Oldham Athletic 7-0 in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Ahead of Saturday's game, Klopp picked out Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who has stood out for his team so far this year and posed a threat with his lethal eye for goal and strength leading the line.

Klopp said: "Brentford is a nice story. Ivan Toney, I have to say.

"They all work as a unit. He has the trust and faith and he shows what you can get out of a player. He was on the market, not sure who wanted him. Brentford did. It's not about the problems you have, it's solutions."

Toney already has two goals and one assist in five league games so far this season, and Brentford will look to cause an upset against the Reds.

Who will come out on top as Brentford host Liverpool? Have your say in the comments.

Klopp only had praise for the newly-promoted team, comparing them to his first managerial job when he took over a struggling Mainz and turned them around.

He said: "It reminds me of the time I coached at Mainz. We had to work in the transfer market clever.

"Brentford have a chance against us. They are well-drilled and it's 3-5-2. Everyone is ready to make the extra yard with a new stadium."

Alongside their on-the-pitch work, Brentford have earned plaudits for how they have scoured the transfer market for hidden gems like Toney.

Before Toney, Brentford's attack was led by Ollie Watkins and Neil Maupay, who they bought for £8.3million in total and later sold for a combined value of £50million.

Both Liverpool and Brentford have impressed defensively this term, with the Reds back to their old selves after Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez returned from injury.

Klopp said: "Ali [Alisson] has made brilliant saves in moments. As a unit we have defended pretty well so far. No-one wanted to hear it but we have three new players in Joel, Virg and Joe.

"Palace was a new last line and we needed a clear defending attitude. We have that."

Meanwhile, Brentford boss Thomas Frank has praised Liverpool, admitting this will be his team's toughest test to date this season.

He said: "What is so impressive with Liverpool is that they are an attacking threat from so many areas.

"When you are facing some teams, maybe it is mostly crosses you face. But, against Liverpool, they are fantastic at crossing, fantastic at combining through the middle, fantastic at counter-attacking high and deep. Every angle they can hit you with."
