In-form Solanke looks to shoot down old club but Liverpool are comeback kings

talksport.com, 19 January 2024, 11:00
Dominic Solanke is having a season to remember and the Bournemouth striker will want nothing more than to continue his form against Liverpool this weekend.

Solanke spent two years at the Reds after joining from Chelsea in 2017 but made just 21 Premier League appearances for the club.

In that time, he also only managed to find the net once, scoring in a 4-0 win over Brighton at Anfield in May 2018.

The 26-year-old was sold to Bournemouth for £19million and from then on he has found a home - and his shooting boots.

Solanke has scored 21 goals in the top-flight for the Cherries and 12 of those have come in just 19 games this season.

He is joint-third in the goalscoring charts alongside Tottenham's Heung-min Son and two goals behind Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Man City's Erling Haaland.

Andoni Iraola has brought the best of his No 9 who has scored in each of his last three home games for Bournemouth.

Should the latest Premier League Player of the Month winner score against his former club this weekend, he will set a Cherries record.

A fourth consecutive goal at the Vitality Stadium will make Solanke the first Bournemouth player to find the net in as many games at home in the top-flight.

And what better team to achieve the feat against than your former side.

Of course, it won't be an easy task for Solanke though, as Liverpool sit two points clear at the top of the table and in brilliant form.

The Bournemouth frontman will be keen to break the record early in the game but that definitely won't secure a win for his side.

That's because Jurgen Klopp's team have built a reputation as the Premier League's comeback kings.

They have rescued more points from losing positions than any other team this season with 19, and 12 of those have come away from home.

This ability to come from behind has seen Liverpool pick up some crucial results, only losing one of their last 14 league games in which they have trailed.

The Reds have won six and drawn seven after going a goal down, not losing since facing Tottenham in September when they conceded in the 96th minute.

So Klopp's side won't be fazed should Solanke strike against his former employers early doors as they look to maintain top spot.

It will still be a special afternoon for the Bournemouth star if he finds the net though, and he will be aiming to continue his superb scoring form this weekend.
