The Italian goalkeeper was subjected to multiple insults as he left Molineux on Saturday to board the team bus, leading him to confront the individual shouting the abuse

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was abused and insulted by an AC Milan fan after Saturday's Nations League clash against England at Molineux.

As per Italian media outlet Corriere della Sera, the Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper was insulted several times by the fan as he left the stadium after the scoreless draw. Donnarumma then turned around to point at the individual and walk towards him, as he was in a group of fans who were asking for player autographs as they made their way to the team bus.

Donnarumma had initially ignored the insults but was visibly irritated after they continued, resulting in a short argument that caused the fan to stop. After the incident, a member of the Italian national team staff hugged the keeper, who dismissed the whole episode as 'nonsense'.

The shot-stopper ended his career-long association with Milan last summer when he failed to agree terms on a new contract with the Rossoneri and subsequently departed the club to join Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

Donnarumma was the hero for his nation a year ago as he saved two penalties in the Euro 2020 final against England to secure the title for the Azzurri but there is no healing of relations with large sections of Milan fans.

Following Euro 2020, the ultras of the Milanese giants revealed two separate banners aimed at the goalkeeper, including the message: "Be careful, we don't forget traitors."

Have Your Say! Where does Donnarumma rank in the world's best goalkeepers? Tell us what you think here.

One banner read: "We don't forget traitors, be careful when you will be back in Milan," while the other declared: "Donnarumma ungrateful bast… you suck more than Leonardo." The second banner was a reference to then-sporting director Leonardo, who was associated with the Rossoneri as a player, manager and sporting director before moving across the city to Inter.

Donnarumma made his first-team debut aged just 16 and instantly becoming the regular goalkeeper at the club, where he went on to make 251 first-team appearances. The banners were unveiled a little over a week since Gianluigi's elder brother Antonio also ended his four-year stint at the club to join Serie C club Padova.

Donnarumma made just 17 appearances in Ligue 1 during his debut season with Les Parisiens - fewer than half of the league matches. The Italian was primarily an understudy domestically for the club's established goalkeeper Keylor Navas, although the keeper was selected in five of the club's eight Champions League fixtures - including both Round of 16 games against Real Madrid.
