Fonseca made to wait for first Spurs signing as 'agreement' made for striker

Tottenham are set to miss out on the signing of Nicolas Gonzalez as Brighton have agreed a club-record fee for the Stuttgart striker.

The 23-year-old was linked with a move to Spurs as director of football Fabio Paratici looked to make his first signing on behalf of Paulo Fonseca who is set to become the club's new boss.

Gonzalez, who is on international duty with Argentina at the Copa America scored six goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances last season.

The Seagulls have tracked the forward for some time and failed in a bid to sign him last summer.

But Graham Potter's men have made a breakthrough after weeks of negotiations, agreeing a £25million fee for Gonzalez, according to the Guardian.

Gonzalez could have been a potential replacement for Harry Kane who has been linked with a move away from Spurs this summer.

Paratici, who spent 11 years at Juventus, will become the public face of the club's hierarchy and have a huge say on their transfer dealings with Fonseca expected to shortly follow.

But the Italian isn't wasting any time waiting for the new manager's appointment to be made official as he has already started working on Spurs' signing plans for this summer.

Gonzalez is one of several targets being looked at with wholesale changes expected at the club, but it appears they will lose out on this occasion unless they match Brighton's £25m offer.

But Spurs might need to get players off their books before any signings are made as football.london reports that their budget will be funded by player sales with Paratici telling certain individuals they can look for a new team this summer.

La Repubblica claims Paratici has also started looking at potential replacements from Fonseca's former club Roma.

The Portuguese is interested in signing trio Gianluca Mancini, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Gonzalo Villar.

Spurs' main priority is to strengthen their defence after a poor season at the back in the Premier League.

Mancini, Joachim Anderson and Milan Skriniar are among the names on the club's shortlist with the futures of Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier up in the air.

Mancini, 25, is highly rated in Italy and his no-nonsense approach could shore up Tottenham's backline if he were to follow Fonseca to London.
