England squad: Ramsdale v Pickford - who should be Southgate's first-choice

The 23-year-old shot-stopper once again made some fine saves to keep out the Foxes in the Gunners' 2-0 win at the Emirates on Sunday.

And it has caused renewed debate about whether Ramsdale, whose sole international cap came in the 10-0 win over San Marino in November, should now be England's main man between the sticks.

Jordan Pickford has been Southgate's preferred choice for the last two major tournaments but what do the stats say?

Well, a direct comparison of the two shows that Ramsdale has indeed been outperforming the Everton keeper in the Premier League this term.

Ramsdale is conceding fewer goals per 90 minutes than at Pickford at 0.87 compared to 1.76.

However, that could be helped by the fact that Arsenal as a team have shipped 29 goals this season - much less than Everton's 49.

Facing more shots has also meant Pickford's 3.40 save ratio is slightly better than Ramsdale's 3.04.

Although, the key stat is the pair's save percentage, in which ex-Sheffield United ace Ramsdale's 77.8 percent success rate far exceeds his rival's 65.9 percent.

Part of what has secured Pickford's spot in Southgate's team over the likes of Nick Pope and Sam Johnstone has been his ability to play out from the back.

Yet despite that being a key part of his game, Ramsdale boasts superior keeping sweepings this campaign at 0.48 compared to 0.44.

Crucially, while Pickford has never let England down, he does have one error leading to a goal in the Premier League this season.

The 28-year-old allowed Son Heung-min's shot to squirm under in his body for Tottenham's second goal in their 5-0 win over Everton this month.

talkSPORT's Jamie O'Hara has admitted Ramsdale is currently better on form but insists Pickford is still England's man between the sticks.

He said: "[Ramsdale] is currently the best performing England goalkeeper right now. His distribution, everything about him has been a class act since he's gone to Arsenal.

"The issue that you've got with Gareth Southgate is Jordan Pickford performs for England.

"And it's hard to say a keeper comes in who's performed well for Arsenal gets the nod over that England goalkeeper and be number one because in competitions, Jordan Pickford has been outstanding.

"I think Southgate trusts him, he knows what he's getting when he plays for England so I think at this moment in time it's still Jordan Pickford's shirt.

"(Ramdsale's) gonna have to keep doing what he's doing to take that shirt off him."

England face Switzerland and Ivory Coast later this month as they continue their preparations for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Southgate will name his squad for those matches at 2pm on Thursday, March 17.
