Elliott showed why he's highly rated at Leeds - and why Liverpool will feel loss

Liverpool's trip to a packed Elland Road was always going to be one to watch, but the dynamic of the visitors entrusting an 18-year-old to pull the strings in the middle of the park added another layer.

However, it would end just on the hour mark after Harvey Elliot suffered a serious injury following a tackle from Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk which will undoubtedly side-line him for a significant period.

The afternoon started brightly, the decision to start Elliott earned the teenager a place in the history books, as he became the youngest midfield player to start three consecutive league games for Liverpool.

The hosts were described before the game by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp as a "very intense, very aggressive, very physical" side - yet it did not phase Elliot.

The teenager spent much of the first half taking up positions nearer the right-flank, providing Salah with plenty of short-passes as he recycled the ball seemingly every time the Leeds back-line aimed to clear their lines.

Mohamed Salah made history as he bagged his 100th Premier League goal, lashing home from close range after a pinpoint ground cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While the game saw the likes of Salah and Sadio Mane steal the headlines with their forward play, Elliot quietly kept things ticking over as the Reds registered their third win of the season - the second on their travels.

The former Fulham star also continued the impressive feat of ensuring his passing accuracy never falls below 75 per cent in all of his Premier League games.

Liverpool began to dominate proceedings after Salah's 20th minute strike, the first half ending with Leeds attempting just two shots on goal compared to Liverpool's 12 - three of which came from Elliot.

Should Liverpool have signed a central midfielder in the summer? Comment below.

Fabinho and Mane increased Liverpool's lead after the interval, but the entire contest was to be overshadowed by Elliot's freak accident and the subsequent injury.

His injury is not only tragic given in it happened to one of the most exciting prospects in English football at the beginning of what is sure to be a stellar career, but could prove costly to Liverpool in the long run.

It is a testament to Elliot's talent that Klopp opted against buying a central midfield replacement for the now-departed Gini Wijnaldum, instead throwing the Chertsey-born star into the thick of the action.

Elliot's absence will be sorely felt by Klopp's side, but providing he makes a full recovery - his 60 minute performance this afternoon alone enough to spark huge excitement over the player Liverpool have on their hands.
