It has not been a good couple of days for Manchester United stars as De Gea is the latest to miss out on an international call-up.
United forwarded Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were both left out of Gareth Southgate's England squad announced on Thursday.
Southgate explained that their recent form had not warranted selection, but Harry Maguire's inclusion raised a few eyebrows.
Form has not been an issue for goalkeeper De Gea, who has arguably been one of the Red Devils' best performers all season.
But Spain manager Luis Enrique decided to omit the 31-year-old, who has 45 caps for his country, from his latest squad ahead of the internationals with Albania and Iceland.
There was a place for Brentford's David Raya, who received his first international call-up, and Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
De Gea has not played a single minute for his country since a 1-0 defeat to Ukraine in the Nations League back in October 2020.
He spent his time as back-up to Athletic Bilbao's Unai Simon during Euro 2020 and the World Cup qualifying campaign.
