CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions: Date, time and previous winners

Italy will face against Argentina in a match that sees the UEFA Euro 2020 champions take on the CONMEBOL Copa America victors.

The game is called the Finalissima, with it taking place after UEFA and CONMEBOL signed a renewed and extended Memorandum of Understanding on December 15, 2021.

Italy booked their place in the fixture by defying the odds to win Euro 2020 last summer. They topped a group containing Turkey, Wales and Switzerland and eventually went on to beat England in the final on penalties.

As for Argentina, they ended a 28-year wait for a Copa America triumph when they beat Brazil 1-0 in the final, another chapter in that famous South American rivalry. That was their 15th Copa America final win.

The Finalissima will be a one-off fixture played over 90 minutes. There is no extra time, so if the tie is level at the end of regulation time, then it will go straight to penalties. The referee appointment will be made jointly by the two confederations.

The game will take place on Wednesday, June 1, and will kick off at 20:45 CEST, 19:45 BST, and 15:45 Argentinian time.

The game is being played at the site of Italy's Euro 2020 win, the legendary Wembley Stadium in London.

This will be the third time the European Championship holders have met their South American counterparts in a match organised by UEFA and CONMEBOL.

In 1985 France defeated Uruguay 2-0 in Paris, and eight years later Argentina edged out Denmark on penalties on home turf at the Estadio Jose Maria Minella.

The match is part of expanded cooperation between UEFA and CONMEBOL, as UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin explained in December.

"We are very much looking forward to exploring new opportunities together and we are eagerly awaiting the Finalissima in London in June 2022," he said.
