Boehly likes to be heard - but new Chelsea owner will put money where mouth is

Jurgen Klopp, as usual, made an interesting point when talking about the possibility of the Premier League producing another two-horse title race next season.

"We are not that far ahead," he said. "That's always a misunderstanding of the points tally of last season.

"We played Chelsea four times and we didn't win one game against them."

Chelsea were beaten twice by Manchester City but, on each occasion, by the odd goal.

If it soon becomes clear the battle for top spot will, indeed, be another duel between Klopp and Pep Guardiola, Thomas Tuchel might be in a spot of bother.

Because by the end of this transfer window - if not by the start of the Premier League season in three weeks time - it looks as though Todd Boehly will have given him all the tools needed to ensure City and Liverpool do not have it all their own way.

On this page last week, the imminent capture of Raheem Sterling was described as THE signing of the summer.

That will remain the case but the recruitment of Kalidou Koulibaly is not too shabby either.

And you have to believe there will be more to follow.

There is still talk of more defensive additions, with Presnel Kimpembe a definite possibility.

As part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boehly has a record of being keen to spend heavily on personnel for the coach.

In 2020, right fielder Mookie Betts was given a 12-year deal worth $365million, the third-richest contract in the history of North American sports.

In that year, Betts finished second behind Freddie Freeman, of the Atlanta Braves, in the National League Most Valuable Player voting.

Freeman is now a Dodgers player with a six-year $162million contract.

Boehly is clearly prepared to pay the big bucks and by the way he cleared the boardroom after his arrival, he can be ruthless.

But that should not come as any sort of surprise - there can be few multi-billionaires who are as soft as mush.

In Major League Baseball, a coach's position is normally as precarious as a Premier League manager's position.

Halfway through the current season, three have lost their jobs.

Boehly and his fellow owners appointed Dave Roberts as Dodgers coach in November, 2015, and Roberts recently signed a new contract that will take him through to 2025.

The Dodgers currently sit top of the National League West with a 58-30 record.

It seems there are few working for the Dodgers franchise who have a bad word to say about Boehly.

As Chelsea owner, he might take a little getting used to. Already interim sporting director, he is clearly a hands-on type of guy.

Don't be surprised to see him in the locker room, don't be surprised if he has a view on who should be playing upfront.

But he will give Tuchel a fair crack of the whip and the tools to do exactly that.

Chelsea fans still have a lot of affection for Roman Abramovich but the journey under Todd Boehly's ownership could be every bit as dramatic.
