7 of the best Premier League deals that have gone under the radar this summer

mirror.co.uk, 16 July 2022, 12:11
Away from the big-money deals involving the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, there have been plenty of other impressive Premier League transfers

There have been plenty of big moves already during the summer transfer window, making it easier for some smaller switches to go unnoticed in comparison.

Manchester City acted early to bring Erling Haaland in from Borussia Dortmund, while Liverpool broke the bank to pick up Benfica star Darwin Nunez. More recently, we have seen Chelsea flex their muscles to bring in Raheem Sterling and big-spending Newcastle add Sven Botman to their ranks.

With so much going on, it's been easy to miss what could be among the most impressive pick-ups of the summer. Here, Mirror Football picks out seven moves which might have gone under the radar.

Gavin Bazunu (Manchester City to Southampton)

Goalkeeper was a tricky position for Southampton last season. Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy played roughly half a season apiece, with Willy Caballero's two games making up the difference, and Forster's exit for Tottenham Hotspur prompted action from the Saints.

They opted for Bazunu, one of two Man City youngsters to move south along with Romeo Lavia. The Irishman has staked a claim for a regular starting spot for his country despite never playing above League One, and Ralph Hasenhuttl will hope he can make the step up.

Bazunu marshalled one of League One's best defences at Portsmouth last season, having spent the previous campaign with Rochdale. Southampton will hope the 20-year-old can emulate another former Rochdale loanee, Robert Sanchez, and establish himself in the top tier.

Nathan Collins (Burnley to Wolves)

While James Tarkowski's move to Everton might have been the higher-profile Burnley departure, Collins' move also points to the quality in the freshly relegated side. Wolves took their time wrapping up their first deal of the summer, but it's easy to see what the centre-back can offer them.

After captaining Stoke City as a teenager, Collins moved to Burnley in 2021 and quickly looked at home in a back-line which conceded fewer goals than sixth-place Manchester United. It wasn't enough to keep the Clarets afloat, though, and he was always likely to be in demand.

Wolves have lost long-serving defender Romain Saiss over the summer, with other defenders leaving on loan. The arrival of Collins can help strengthen while also potentially letting manager Bruno Lage switch to four at the back and give himself options.

Malcolm Ebiowei (Derby to Crystal Palace)

Last season was a forgettable one for Derby County fans, but there were a few bright sparks. One was the emergence of Malcolm Ebiowei, a young winger who was thrust into the first team by Wayne Rooney and scored his first ever senior goal.

There was plenty of interest in the 18-year-old, with Manchester United reportedly among those in the mix. Instead, though, he opted for a reunion with former Rams teammate Luke Plange at Crystal Palace.

Patrick Vieira has already shown young talents there's a chance of first-team football at Selhurst Park, so it's easy to see why Ebiowei has made this particular move. Now to show he can compete with the likes of Ebere Eze and Michael Olise for minutes in the league.

Boubacar Kamara (Marseille to Aston Villa)

Back in January, it looked like one of a number of Premier League clubs might swoop in for Kamara. Instead, he stayed at Marseille for a few more months, helping them clinch Champions League qualification before moving on.

Manchester United and Newcastle United were both linked with the 22-year-old, who can play in midfield or at centre-back. However, Aston Villa acted early to wrap up a deal on a free transfer.

Kamara is one of a number of additions to Steven Gerrard's squad, including some - like Ludwig Agustinsson and Diego Carlos - who will be playing Premier League football for the first time. With Philippe Coutinho also completing a permanent move after his successful loan, Villa could well be a team to keep an eye on.

Moussa Niakhate (Mainz to Nottingham Forest)

Forest were always going to need to be active in the transfer market after winning promotion. A number of last season's squad were out of contract, with others returning to parent clubs after loan spells, and that's before you factor in the sale of goalkeeper Brice Samba.

Samba has been replaced by loanee Dean Henderson, while Forest have broken their transfer record to sign Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin. However, another Bundesliga recruit could end up being a big player for Steve Cooper's side.

Niakhate arrives off the back of four straight seasons as a starting centre-back for Mainz, where he helped the team to pull away from danger in the 2020-21 season and cruise to a mid-table finish last term. With an initial fee of around £10m, he could be a steal.

Joao Palhinha (Sporting CP to Fulham)

Sporting were supposed to find things tough after losing Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United. That they were instead able to kick on and win the Portuguese title owes more than a bit to Palhinha.

The 27-year-old, who came through the ranks at the Lisbon club, had been close to an exit in 2020 after a spell out on loan. Instead, though, he ended the 2020-21 season as a domestic champion and part of the Primeira Liga team of the year thanks to his displays in midfield.

Fulham have perhaps been overactive in previous summer windows, but the arrival of the defensive midfielder may point to a more targeted approach under Marco Silva. The Portugal international will hope to demonstrate he is an upgrade on Jean-Michael Seri, who finally ended his stay in London this year.

Marc Roca (Bayern Munich to Leeds)

The upcoming season will be a tough one for Leeds, with key men Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips moving on. However, manager Jesse Marsch began preparing for the departures early.

While Brenden Aaronson can operate in similar spaces to Raphinha, Phillips will be similarly tough to replace. Tyler Adams might be the higher-profile of the central midfield additions, but Roca will offer something different upon his arrival from Bayern Munich.

It may be true that the Spanish under-21 international struggled to establish himself in Bavaria after arriving from Espanyol in 2020, but that shouldn't overshadow the quality he showed in Catalunya. Indeed, Leeds fans may point to another Bayern flop, Ligue 1 champion Renato Sanches, when outlining what they hope their new man can do.
